The
Seal is an extremely stable, 51-foot, 49-passenger
motor vessel. She was built in 1971 by William
J. Hammastrom in Waretown, New Jersey and constructed
of double-plank mahogany and then fiberglassed.
She was delivered to a local Mount Desert Island
boat captain to be used offshore for deep-sea
fishing, and christened the Seal. Since then
it has been used for Whale Watching and Nature
Cruises. Diver Ed bought the boat in 2000 and
with minor renovations converted it to a dive
boat. She is powered with a single Detroit
Diesel V8-71 and cruises at 10 knots with a
maximum speed of 13 knots.
